Clearwater, FL — CPSC: Countertop Ovens Recalled for Burn Hazard

Megaphone with recall alert.

Clearwater, FL (September 30th, 2025) – A sweeping recall of over 1.2 million countertop ovens is underway after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) determined they pose a serious burn hazard. The countertop ovens recalled were sold nationwide over the past decade. Because of the defect, the doors may close unexpectedly—potentially exposing users to intense heat when reaching inside.

What Countertop Ovens Have Been Recalled?

The recall applies to specific Oster French Door Countertop Ovens sold nationwide for nearly a decade. Affected models include: TSSTTVFDXL, TSSTTVFDDG, TSSTTVFDMAF, TSSTTVFDDAF, TSSTTVFDDGDS, TSSTTVFDDAF-033, and TSSTTVFDXLPP-033.

Each of these units features French-style double doors and was sold at popular retailers both in stores and online, with prices ranging from $140 to $250. If you purchased one of these appliances between 2015 and 2025, there is a strong chance your oven may be impacted.

What Sparked the Countertop Oven Recall

According to a FOX13 News report, Sunbeam Products Inc. is recalling seven models of the Oster French Door Countertop Oven after receiving 95 injury reports, including two second-degree burns. These models were sold between August 2015 and July 2025 at major retailers such as Walmart, Costco, Bed Bath & Beyond, Amazon, and Overstock.

Consumers are urged to immediately stop using affected units. The CPSC and manufacturer are offering a free repair kit that includes a clip-on device designed to keep the oven doors held open safely when accessing the interior.

The Burn Risk and How It Happens

These recalled ovens feature French-door access, with doors that open side by side. The issue lies in the door mechanism: in certain units, the doors can close too easily or unexpectedly. That sudden motion can trap hands or forearms inside the oven cavity, causing painful burns even during routine use.

Reports submitted to the CPSC show that users were injured while performing common tasks like pulling out a baking sheet or adjusting food inside. Although the ovens may look sturdy and safe, the design flaw created a hazard that went unnoticed for years.

What You Should Do if You Own a Recalled Countertop Oven

If you own one of the affected ovens, the first step is to stop using it until you confirm whether your unit is covered by the recall. The model number can be found on the back, bottom, or inside panel of the appliance. If it matches the recalled list, contact the manufacturer to request the free repair kit.

Beyond that, it’s wise to keep careful records. Take photographs of the oven and its labels, keep proof of purchase if available, and document any injuries with medical reports and photos. If you’ve been hurt, consult a lawyer experienced in defective product cases to review your situation and determine if you may be entitled to compensation.

Legal Rights Under Product Liability Law

When a product defect causes harm, accountability may extend to the manufacturer, suppliers, distributors, or even the retailer. Under many state product liability laws, strict liability applies. As such, injured consumers don’t necessarily have to prove negligence. Instead, they must establish that the product was defective, that the defect directly caused the injury, and that the product was being used in a reasonably foreseeable way.

In cases like this recall, claims may involve design defects (a hinge mechanism that was inherently unsafe), manufacturing defects (weaker or misaligned components during assembly), or failure to warn (inadequate instructions about the risk of sudden door closure).

If successful, a claim could lead to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, scarring, or even damage to nearby property. Importantly, the timing of the recall doesn’t erase someone’s right to bring a case. Injuries that occurred years ago may still give rise to valid claims if the oven is linked to the harm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I check if my oven is included in the recall?
Look for the model number on the back, bottom, or inside panel of your oven. If it matches one of the seven models listed in previously, your oven is covered by the recall.

I was injured before the recall. Can I still file a claim?
Yes. The fact that your injury happened before the recall was announced does not prevent you from pursuing a legal claim.

Is the free repair kit safe enough?
The kit includes a clip-on device meant to hold the doors open, which reduces the chance of sudden closure. While it may improve safety, the presence of a repair kit doesn’t erase the underlying defect or your right to pursue damages if you’ve already been injured.

Do I have to return the oven?
No. The recall provides a repair, not a replacement or refund. You can choose to keep the appliance, have it repaired, and still explore legal action if you suffered harm.
